Prep pupils explored ‘our wild world’ during Embley Book Week. The children engaged in a range of nature themed activities to develop their vocabulary and literacy skills.Across the school, pupils bought Maurice Sendak’s ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to life through interactive and creative activities. Nursery enjoyed an enchanting afternoon, led by Year 6, in the woods at Embley Park as they delved into the story. The children crafted their own boats and set sail, designed nature masks and took part in a story-telling activity, creating sound effects using musical instruments. Year 6 marked the 250-year anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth by exploring her writing. In the coming weeks the children will discover more about her life and literary works on a walking tour of Southampton.
Reception to Year 3 were mesmerised by an enchanting story-making experience in the woods with Mr Powell, our Prep Head of English. The children used props and group discussion to inspire and develop their ideas. Each year group wrote a section of the story and everyone was excited to hear the complete tale in Celebration Assembly. Inspired by 'The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods' by Mikey Please, pupils then designed their own monsters and peculiar food!
On World Book Day, pupils took part in a costume parade, showing off their creativity by dressing up as their favourite book characters. It was a great way for the children to discover new reading recommendations as they identified the different costumes.
Children across the school had the opportunity to engage in virtual author visits. MC Grammar spoke about his new book ‘The Adventures of Rap Kid’ whilst Phillipa Gregory who spoke with Year 6, ahead of International Women’s Day, regarding her new book ‘Normal Women’.
During the week, pupils also enjoyed cosy reading sessions in our Library discovering new books from the Waterstones Children's Book Prize Shortlist and we launched this year’s sponsored ‘Readathon’ in aid of the Read for Good charity - a fantastic initiative to support children’s literacy and access to books.
