Curiosity in action for British Science Week

Embley celebrated British Science Week with a range of engaging workshops and activities inspired by this year’s theme “Curiosity: what’s your question?” Throughout the week, pupils were encouraged to ask questions, explore different approaches to scientific thinking and develop their curiosity about the world around them.
Year 1 and 2 took part in a fascinating Marine Biology session with Dr Reed. They had the opportunity to handle a range of mystery objects from under the sea. Throughout the session, the children were encouraged to use their observational skills and ask thoughtful questions to investigate each item.
We were also delighted to welcome Dr Damien O’Farrell who spoke to the children about permaculture and food forests. Years 3 and 4 discovered more about the different layers in a food forest and how they work together to maintain and protect the ecosystem. The children then got hands on, crafting their own food forests. They were challenged to think carefully about the different layers - from the root like networks of mycelium to the canopy of trees.
Year 4 to 6 welcomed Ben, Rob and Leah from Lexington to lead an exciting workshop on the science of cooking. After an expert demonstration, the children got hands-on creating their very own omelettes. They also explored the science behind the ingredients including the function of different vitamins and minerals and how they contribute to a healthy diet.
The children also discovered more about forensic science in a challenging workshop run by Education Group. They were tasked with investigating a mock crime scene and identifying the victim and suspect by using evidence, fingerprints and DNA.
The week was a great opportunity for our pupils to discover more about how science connects to everyday life and take part in interactive, hands-on activities that sparked discussion, investigation and new ideas.
